Toronto duo’s EP is due out April 20 on One Big Silence

Moon King’s Obsession II EP comes out on Record Store Day, April 20, via One Big Silence. The Toronto band’s six songs here are dream-pop with fangs, packing their reverb-layered surfaces with punchy playing and swooning melodies. The band consists of Daniel Woodhead (whose brother is Airick of Doldrums) and his longtime friend Maddie Wilde, and they’re touring now. Moon King Announce Obsession II

It only takes two gigantic drum hits for Toronto dream rock duo Moon King to launch “Appel”, the blown out shoegaze anthem taken from a forthcoming EP. The band is connected to a handful of other ascendant Canadian alt-pop projects– Doldrums, Grimes,Austra– but they differentiate themselves from their peers by pulling from a different set of influences, focusing on Cocteau Twins and the Jesus and Mary Chain. Daniel Benjamin’s production rewards high-volume listening without sacrificing its layer of distancing fuzz, while vocalist Maddy Wilde spends much of the song tucked behind that layer until its final minute, when she blasts through the murk for a period of relative clarity. It’s a surprising and rewarding conclusion to this promising effort.

NOW Toronto Premieres 4 Part “UFO” Video Teaser

As a teaser for the video, the band has teamed up with filmmakers Exploding Motor Car to produce a series of four short clips, designed to be watched simultaneously, Zaireeka-style. Each clip shows the same cryptic paranormal encounter from a different perspective.

“Each one of the clips stands well on its own, but when you watch them all at the same time you’re pretty much bombarded,” explains multi-instrumentalist Moshe Rozenberg. “It’s as hectic and overwhelming as an actual UFO sighting, like ‘I don’t know what’s happening, but I’m shivering.’”
